Background: Throughout our nation's history, numerous young men and women courageously left their homes and sacrificed their well-being to serve in the Armed Forces. Their dedication ensured
our freedom and profoundly influenced global history. In many cases Veterans interrupted their education development to serve our nation and subsequently went on to lead productive lives, making significant contributions to our communities. Operation Recognition is an initiative that pays tribute to honorably discharged Veterans of World
War II and the Korean War who left school early to serve. This initiative awards these Veterans with honorary high school diplomas. Since 2000, Kansas has been a participant in this program, with local Kansas School Districts conferring over 480 honorary diplomas to deserving Veterans. Whether conducted privately, as part of a graduation ceremony, or School Board Meeting presentation, this recognition holds profound significance for Veterans and their families. Current Situation: In the years following the Vietnam War, more than 40 states have expanded eligibility under Operation Recognition to include Vietnam Veterans. Recently, a representative from Operation Recognition urged us to consider joining these states to duly recognize our Vietnam Veterans who experienced similar circumstances as those who had served during WWII and the Korean War.
Following consultations with the Kansas Legislative Research Department and the Kansas State Board of Education (KSDE), it has been established that Kansas currently lacks statutory guidelines governing the operation of this program. The KSDE has clarified that the decision to participate in Operation Recognition rests with local school boards.
Gov Kelly signed a Proclamation on January 151\ 2025, to expand our states participation in the Operation Recognition to include all Veterans from conflicts recognized by the U.S. Congress with an honorary high school diploma if eligible. At this time, only Veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam have been impacted by this break in their education and we are respectfully encouraging the participation of all Kansas School Districts in extending this program to honorably discharged Vietnam Veterans. Eligible Veterans
must have served during the Vietnam War Era (February 28, 1961, to May 7, 1975).

Centre will have a two-hour delayed start tomorrow morning because of the extremely cold wind chill temperatures forecast. Classes will begin at 10:00 AM. Evening activities will run as scheduled.

Families with children participating in the Little Cougar Cheer Performance tonight need to have their child at the game by 7:15pm. They need to wear their cheer shirt, black leggings or black shorts, bow, and tennis shoes. Thank you and see you all tonight!

Yesterday, Centre Freshman Derrick Harms competed at the Newton Boys Swim Invitational against 3A to 6A schools. Derrick had a personal record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 31.66 and competed in the 100 breaststroke for the 1st time in his swimming career. Derrick is the first male student to swim under Centre High School. He will head to Salina on Thursday for another swim meet.

The Centre Spelling Bee will take place on Wednesday, January 22, starting at 12:15. It will take place in the Main Gym.
Centre will also be hosting the Marion County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, February 11. This will start at 10:00 and be in the Main Gym.
