Once again the road conditions in the Centre School District have not improved enough to allow for safe passage for our buses and students to travel. With the wind chill expected to be less than a minus 10 degrees, that adds to the danger. I appreciate the work our county crews have been doing trying to get our roads safe, but they haven't been able to keep up. No school tomorrow, Friday, January 12th for USD 397 and all activities are canceled as well.

It's been nearly two weeks since we received the tragic news of the loss of one of our senior students. I cannot express how proud I am of our students, faculty, staff, and the Centre communities for the way they have come together to support each other. The Herington and Marion Districts both sent additional counselors to Centre to help our students and staff deal with the loss of Michelle and with the uncertainty of the recovery of Dwayne. Herington sent one of their counselors back for two days to help the teachers and staff deal with the loss as well. Teachers and Staff met with me Tuesday morning to go over our crisis plan and then had to go to their classes and try and teach class while having to deal with the loss themselves. The outpouring of support from our neighboring districts has been overwhelming. When our basketball teams arrived in their locker rooms for the Herington tournament, they all had a Gatorade and flower in each of their lockers to remember Michelle. The cheer team from White City sent a beautiful flower arrangement to our cheer team and the Marion STUCO sent a beautiful plant to our student council. Fund raisers were immediately planned, and funds began to pour in. The Centre PTO raised over $2600 at the tailgate they sponsored at the basketball game last week. An additional $2500 was raised through donations at Junior High Basketball game and Christmas Concert last Thursday. The JH girls' basketball team from Gossell donated nearly $200 while the Gossell JH boys team donated $100, and the JH football team donated an additional $100 to the families. Several businesses also held fund raisers and donated proceeds from sales to the families as well. We were notified Thursday that Dwayne has lost his brain function and that he would be donating his organs. The family invited students and staff to attend Dwayne's Honor Walk Friday afternoon and we had 61 students and staff that showed their respect by attending the honor walk. Tragedies like we have gone through either bring out the worst in people or the best. Everyone involved with the Centre District showed their best as they all came together to support the families and our students and staff. I can't begin to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support for our district during this time. As usual, I am Cougar Proud of our Centre schools and communities that came together. While we continue to mourn the loss of two terrific young adults, we are blessed to have known them and continue to pray for their families. Thank you again for all the support and love extended to the Centre District.
